LEPINE, Invenit et Fecit
Late 18th century
Gold and enamel pendant watch with pearl-set decoration
Our little collar watch is a fine example, made by the famous French watchmaker Jean-Antoine Lépine (1720-1814). In his time, he was favored by the Bourbons and Napoleon, and known for his invention of a new caliber, the "Calibre Lépine". With the aim of developing finer movements, he swapped the fusée and chain for a barrel to directly drive the gear train. This explains the inscription "Invenit et Fecit" on the dial. This formula was used by French master watchmakers in the late 18th century. Today, it is used on all creations by independent watchmaker François-Paul Journe.
