Early 19th century
Gold quarter repeating watch with Jaquemarts automaton

The origin of the word "Jaquemarts" dates back to the 14th century. It refers to a person armed with a hammer, who strikes the hours on the gong or bell of a clock placed at the top of a building.
Among the most famous "Jaquemarts" in the history of public buildings are the two bronze Moors who strike the hours and are placed at the top of the Clock Tower in Venice. In our example, when the automatons are a woman and a man, the complication is also called "Martin Martine".
