From 1920, and the birth of Czechoslovakia in 1918, the
Nesseldorfer brand, created in 1850, was renamed 'Tatra',
after the country's highest mountain range. Hans Ledwinka, a
brilliant young engineer who had shortly before presented the
world's first car with four-wheel brakes, before leaving for a short
spell at Steyr, returned to Tatra in 1921. As soon as he arrived,
Ledwinka proposed to the management a small car project he
had been working on for a few years, based on a central-beam
chassis - another first!
The result was the Type 11, which introduced a number of
important innovations. It was a great success, but its twin-cylinder
engine was becoming too light, so it was decided to design a
new model, the Type 57, with a 4-cylinder engine.
The car that illustrates these pages is one of the very few survivors
of this limited production run. Purchased in Germany in 1996 by
its current owner, the car has since been completely restored,
and is now presented to us in very fine condition.
Our example is dressed in sumptuous Cabriolet Luxe bodywork,
