NOTE
A Kyoto artist, Shiokawa Bunrin studied with Okamoto Toyohuko and became a central figure of the Shijo school. He worked for the Kyoto aristocracy, notably the Yasui family. Fireflies ("Hotaru") are a recurring motif in Bunin's work. This subject may have been inspired by chapter 45 ("Iku Hotaru" Fireflies in Flight) of the Ise Monogatari, where a man has just learned that the woman who loved him has died without confessing her love. It should be noted that a vertical Bunrinl scroll with a similar subject is preserved in the collections of the British Museum (1980,0728,0.4). Other works by the artist are in the collections of the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford| Freer Gallery of Art, Washington| Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York| Tokyo National Museum| Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
