CHINA FOR THE SCOTTISH MARKET
QING DYNASTY, 18th CENTURY
Porcelain sorbet and saucer with coat-of-arms decoration
Decorated with family enamels of a mavelot with the initials "H", "M", "K", "J" and "F" on a boat cup. Surmounted by a royal crown on a heart pierced by two arrows, flanked by Neptune and a lion.

D. 7.2 cm and 12 cm

NOTE
This piece was probably commissioned by a Scottish Jacobite via one of the Scandinavian India companies. Its highly unusual iconography possibly refers to James Francis Stuart, "The King over the Water" also nicknamed the "Old Pretender" by his opponents. A similar piece is illustrated in HOWARD, "Chinese Armorial Porcelain", n°F7, p. 274.
