LATE QING DYNASTY (1644-1911)
Ming-style blue-white porcelain vase
The flattened globular body rises to a high, slightly flared neck, decorated with a large frieze of varied flowers among foliate scrolls and underlined by lotus petals. The shoulder is adorned with ruyi heads, friezes of flowers and foliage. The neck decorated with banana leaves, ruyi heads and wave frieze. The base with a six-character Qianlong mark in zhuanshu.
H. 37.8 cm
Provenance: Ernest and Oscar Moulié Collection
NOTE
During the 18th century, the Qing emperors were particularly interested in early 15th-century Chinese production, considered to be a golden age for porcelain. Thus, the Jingdezhen workshops developed decorative motifs inspired by Yongle and Xuande porcelain, while attempting to reproduce the mottled effects of burnt cobalt blue and orange peel characteristic of pieces from this period. From Emperor Yongzheng onwards, successive rulers revisited this famous blue and white motif.
