"Vlaminck painted villages, houses, gardens, bouquets on a table corner, fruit, fish, a half-full glass, a still-warm pipe, a piece of bread with a bite in it. As I was saying, the main character isn't there, he's just gone to work, he's going home to eat his soup. He hides in his house or behind the glass of the bistro. The bread dries between the liter and the cheese. If the man appears, it's far down the street. Or he's shivering across the snow-covered courtyard, drinking at the café at the far end of the square, angling on the other side of the river, still seemingly far from us. Well, here's the miracle. In these canvases, from which man seems absent, humanity is everywhere present."
Georges Duhamel, "Vlaminck", in. Paris-Soir, June 12, 1924, n°251, p. 1
