Two large volumes in-4 (text + sequels), (text vol.): cream morocco decorated on boards and spines with mosaic Havana morocco pieces, evoking a representation of the Picrocholine War, with half of Rabelais' face on the lower board from an old illustration, the mute spine bearing six curved pieces in relief, upper spine decorated with a portrait of Rabelais after Matisse in mosaic. decorated with a mosaic portrait of Rabelais after Matisse, title in old-style mosaic lettering on lower flyleaf, gray suede endpapers, gilt head, untrimmed, cover and spine preserved, cloth jacket protecting text, black leather jacket with title in mosaic lettering on spine, author's name and a mosaic figure on upper flyleaf, decorated gray moiré satin slipcase| (vol. de suites): similar binding with the other half of Rabelais' face, on the upper flyleaf a portrait of Gargantua, and on the lower flyleaf Rabelais' name, similar slipcase and chemise.
Edition illustrated with 60 original color lithographs by the painter Antoni Clavé (1913-2005), and 57 wood-engraved letterplates and culs-de-lampe by Blaise Monod after the artist's drawings.
Limited edition of 220 copies on strong vellum paper, including 20 reserved for collaborators, and 25 "suites", each comprising: a suite of all the illustrations, with colors not used in the tests and different from those in the book, a suite in black of the illustrations, a suite in color and black of the illustrations not used in the book, a suite in color of the lettering, and the color breakdown of one plate.
This one, no. CIII, nominative for René Marx, is enriched with one of these "suites de suites", which constitutes the second volume.
Remarkable original binding by Ramon Gomez Herrera, signed in pencil and dated 1997.
