Rare first edition of this superb album of 12 large and beautiful stencil-colored prints by Umberto Brunelleschi, illustrating the characters of the commedia dell'arte, his most sought-after work.
The plates feature : Harlequin, Doctor Ballanzone, Brighella, Coralline, Florindo, Giacometta, Mezzetin and Columbine, Pantalon, Rosaura, Scaramouche, Tartaglia and Trivellino, were engraved by H. Reidel, stencilled by Gréningaire fils &| Cie, printed by MM. Braun. The text is by Marie de Régnier d'Houville, née Heredia, better known by her pseudonym Gérard d'Houville. Typography by Pozzoli.
Limited edition of 415 copies: one of the top 10 on japon, containing the engravings in 3 states (in black before and with the letter, in color). Only the first 5 copies were enriched with the autograph signatures of the painter and author| however, this one, number 6 and nominative for Louis Becker, is enriched with Brunelleschi's signature.
