[BOOK FROM THE XVIth CENTURY]. [NICOLAS (Gilbert), IN RELIGION GABRIEL-MARIA].
Rouen, Martin Morin, [circa 1510]. Two works in a small in-8 volume [h = 137 mm.], [16] f. | [12] f., 41 lines on 2 col. gothic carpets, figs, modern ivory parchment, muted spine (minor browning and stains).
Extremely rare collection of two treatises by the strictly observant Franciscan Gilbert Nicolas (Riom 1462 - Rodez 1532), confessor of St. Jeanne de France, with whom he founded the Order of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary in 1501.
Of the first work, we have found only one other known copy. The second can be considered a unicum until proven otherwise.
The first work deals with monastic poverty, the second with the rule of the Franciscan order. The first treatise is illustrated with 2 woodcuts (f. 15v° and f. 16 r°): a scene of the Annunciation, and a Virgin and Child. The large woodcut bookseller's mark appears at the end of each work.
The copy is entirely rubricated in red ink, and the two engravings, the bookseller's marks and a large lettering have been enhanced in green, red and yellow (USTC 111344, only 1 copy located, BNF Rés H2224| and 111335, no copy located: "lost book").
