[The beggars]. [Avec] : [La noblesse] | [les grands apôtres]. Paris, Paris, Israël Henriet, 1631 | Israël Silvestre, [between 1661 and 1691]. Three volumes in-4, late 17th c. mottled brown calf, ornate ribbed spines, brown title-pieces, gilt roulette at the edges, red or mottled edges, skilfully restored (some slight foxing).
A precious homogeneous set of three suites by Jacques Callot, assembled and bound in the 17th century. Each volume is headed by a portrait of the artist engraved by Michel Lasne. 1. Les gueux. [1] f. (engraved frontispiece), 24 plates. This is one of the most famous and characteristic suites of Callot's art. The frontispiece in 2nd state bears the excudit of Israël Silvestre. 2. Nobility. 24 plates. This volume contains 12 plates, 10 of which are signed by Callot in the plate, showing figures in elegant costumes typical of the nobility of Lorraine (in second state with the excudit of I. Silvestre). They are followed by 14 plates: 4 of the "Bourgeoises dans différentes attitudes"| 3 of small format, "La dévideuse et la fileuse", "Deux dames de condition debout", and a plate of the "Fantaisies"| finally, the second complete suite of the same "Bourgeoises..." composed of 7 plates. 3. Large standing Apostles, decorated with beautiful historiated backgrounds. 16 plates, including engraved title dated 1631.
