SMYTH Henry DEWOLF. (1898-1986).
American physicist and administrator, pioneer in the development of nuclear energy.
Mimeographed TAPUSCRIT, A General Account of the Development of Methods of using Atomic Energy for Military Purposes under the Auspices of the United STateds Government 1940-1945, 1945| stapled 178-page in-4 pamphlet with diagrams| in black cloth dust jacket.
An account of the development of methods of using atomic energy for military purposes, edited for the War Department, Advance printing, released on August 12, 1945, six days after the bombing of Hiroshima, and containing a full account of the work carried out between 1940 and 1945 by the Manhattan Project that led to the production of the first atomic bomb. An early version of the report was a mimeographed copy (bearing the secret stamp on each page), hand-delivered by a military messenger, which recipients were instructed to read immediately and return to the waiting messenger. These copies were apparently destroyed for security reasons, as none survives except for Smyth's personal copy kept in Princeton. 1000 copies were then mimeographed, intended for the press, and distributed on August 11.
Attached is a War Department press release accompanying this report (1 p. in-4 mimeographed), to be distributed only on the evening of August 11.
