First letter of an exchange on the study of gravitational lenses with a young Czech engineer, who will encourage Einstein to resume his calculations.
Einstein explains that he is now certain that Mandl's idea of the Lyra Nebula as a gravitational lens element is wrong. The first formula remains. The second is based on false thinking. He has reasoned that the phenomenon in question cannot be observed, and is therefore no longer in favor of publishing anything about it. Even in the most favorable cases, the background fading radius should not exceed 1/10 of an arcsecond, so the phenomenon is covered by the diffraction of the bright star being diverted. He has already told him that the explanation of the ring nebula as a refraction phenomenon is out of the question. He advises Mandl not to torment himself too much, because in science, you have to bury a lot of seemingly brilliant ideas before you come across one with a solid foundation... Ich habe mirs überlegt, dass das fragliche Phänomen doch nicht beobachtet sein wird, sodass ich nicht mehr dafür bin, etwas darüber zu publzieren. Der Radius für die Auslöschung des Hintergrundes dürfte auch in den günstigsten Fällen kaum 1/10 Bogensekunde übersteigen, sodass das Phänomen durch die Beugunserscheinung des ablenkenden hellen Sternes zugedeckt wird. Ich habe Ihnen schon gesagt, dass die Erklärung der Ringnebel als Refraktionserscheinung nicht in Frage kommt, schon wegen der angularen Ausdehnung dieser Gebilde. Bedauern Sie es nicht zu viel. In der Wissenschaft muss man viele hoffnungsvoll erscheinende Ideen begraben, bis man einmal auf eine verfällt, die standhält"...
