FLAUBERT Gustave. (1821-1880).
L.A.S. "GveFbt", Wednesday morning [October 18, 1871], to his "Cher vieux" [Charles d'OSMOY]| 2 pages in-8 on blue paper.
About Mademoiselle Aïssé, a play by Louis BOUILHET [to be premiered in January 1872]. ... "Perrin didn't want Aïssé! He thought the play was dangerous for the French. If B. were alive," he told me, "he would have received it with enthusiasm, because he would like to see changes that only the author can make. In short, it will be performed at the Odéon after Charles-Edmond's play - probably in December"... As for the cast, "we had to accept the Chevalier Berton fils! - As for the secondary roles, I'm quite embarrassed - &| I need you more than ever"... Flaubert would like to have his friend's opinion on two or three points in the play: "these are important cuts, and those MM. from the Odéon are going to make absurd ones. - I'm really annoyed". He takes Le Sexe faible [another Bouilhet play never to be performed] to Perrin| he urges d'Osmoy to come to Croisset so they can have a quiet chat, and exclaims: "They want to give me Mlle Colombier for Mme de Tencin! [...] I'm sure they'll want to save money on staging. Your authority would be paramount. Everyone says you're going to become Minister of Fine Arts. Many even believe it (sic)"... [The Comte d'Osmoy, Bouilhet and Flaubert's collaborator on Le Château des Coeurs, was elected deputy in February 1871].
