Very beautiful letter from the royalist at the time of leaving France to take refuge in Switzerland.
He replies on behalf of his friend Mme de Duras, who is suffering from dizziness... "You wish, my dear friend, to spend the winter by the fireside of Mde de Duras| I desire it very much for you. It would be proof that you no longer fear anything for your little one, and you would have the happiness of being among your friends. However, you wouldn't find me again. You will no doubt have sensed my plan [...] I have resisted my destiny as long as I could, but at last it must be fulfilled. I'm leaving France, where I can no longer stay. I'm going to sell my rags and settle in Switzerland to work, and then the world will be open to me". His wife has already left, "while I put her bed and mine up for auction here, and as soon as I've handed over the keys and locked the doors, she'll come and join me near Lausanne.
Thus goes the world [...] I have faithfully served three Kings, three brothers, and I have been stripped under all three brothers: of my patrimony under Louis XVI| of my little valley and my books under Louis XVIII, of my pensions and treatments under Charles X. Vive le Roi quand même!"...
