CÉLINE Louis-Ferdinand (1894-1961).
L.A.S. "Destouches" and "Louis", [Copenhagen Prison] Tuesday, August 28, 1946, to his Danish lawyer Thorvald MIKKELSEN and to HIS WIFE Lucette DESTOUCHES| 2 pages in-4 in ink on pink paper headed Københavns Fængsler Prison, Vestre Foengsel.
Beautiful letter from prison, mostly to his wife Lucette, published in Lettres de prison à Lucette Destouches et à Maître Mikkelsen (Gallimard, 1998) [LP116].
The news was encouraging, and he hoped for a positive decision: "Your masterstroke was to persuade the Danish government to accept this invitation from a French Rogatory Commission". The French authorities were thus disarmed, and the Paris public prosecutor's office ridiculed. "French justice is famous for its bad faith - especially in political matters. [...] It is better that French Justice had no serious motive for accusing me, that the ugly role was on its side, despite everything the label of "traitor" is an ugly label, even inflicted lightly and by fanatics. [...] Martyr I am, let's leave it at that! I'm waiting for my wings to sprout!
To his wife, he makes some touching recommendations: "You have to eat butter - it's good for chilblains and fingers - and sugar, sweets, cakes, chocolates. Of course, don't smoke! Never smoke. You must also work hard at your dancing, but only after eating well, and eating meat"... He evokes their friends Marie Canavaggia and Daragnès... "If I'm kicked out of here, I'd like to go to Switzerland, where publishing my old books is immediately possible. To regain my life, what a dream! my independence"...
