VERDI Giuseppe (1813-1901).
L.A.S. "G. Verdi", Busseto May 21, 1852, to M. Marie ESCUDIER in Paris| 2 pages in-8, address with postmarks| in Italian.
About a project to perform his opera Ernani at the Paris Opera.
He has been slow to reply to Escudier's letters, on account of his father's mortal illness, which is getting better ["la mortale malatia di mio padre (che ora stà meglio)"], and other serious matters. He thanks for news of Le Juif Errant [Fromental Halévy's opera, premiered on April 23], which does not seem to have had the success expected ["Pare che questo non abbia ricevuto il successo, che tutti speravono"].
As for Ernani [first performed at La Fenice in March 1844], there's everything to lose and nothing to gain ["tutto da perdere, e nulla da guadagnare"]. The troupe will never be superior, or even equal, to that of the Théâtre Italien, and, despite the beauty of the sets that Roqueplan [director of the Opéra] might make, the result will be far inferior to that of the Italians ["l'esito dell'opera sarà di gran lunge inferiore a quello del teatro Italiano"]. He could not therefore advise Escudier to have Ernani performed ["io non posso consigliarvi a fare rapresentare Ernani"]. And, if one day he were to write for the Opéra, it would be better not to compromise his name with works whose success would be too dubious ["Poi se dovessi un giorno venire a scrivere all'opéra è meglio non compromettere il moi nome con delle opere, il cui esito è troppo dubbio"]...
