Verhaeren has just offered him the portrait of CÉZANNE that he had once painted. He effusively thanks him "for the great surprise you have just given me by so discreetly sending me Cézanne's sketch, you certainly couldn't have given me greater pleasure... If I didn't immediately write you this note of gratitude, it's simply because I've been in Rouen for a month and a half, and the nature of the panel was only imperfectly explained in Eragny. When my son came here to see me, he brought it to me, and naturally I understood that my friend Verhaeren was depriving himself of Cézanne's portrait in order to offer it to me". He asks him if he has seen the exhibition "of our great sculptor [RODIN]", and regrets that "I am busy with a dozen or so reasons in Rouen that prevent me from being away". He will, however, try to "see all the works of our admirable friend"...
