MAGRITTE René (1898-1967).
TAPUSCRIT with autograph additions and corrections, "Depuis le réalisme de Courbet"... | 1 page in-4 corrected in red ballpoint pen.
Very interesting text on painting, extensively corrected. "Since COURBET's realism, painting has "evolved" and "schools" have followed in rapid succession: MONET's impressionism, VAN GOGH's expressionism, MATISSE's fauvism, PICASSO's cubism, MONDRIAN's abstract art". At the bottom of the page, Magritte added in red pencil: "The first sentence could be written as follows: La Peinture n'a cessé d'évoluer depuis le réalisme de Courbet: à l'impressionisme, à l'expressionisme, au fauvisme et au cubisme a succédé l'art abstrait de Mondrian"... The typed text continues, peppered with strikethroughs, replacements and additions: "Yet this so-called 'progress' was in reality a succession of different ways of conceiving the art of painting in its narrowly aesthetic sense: freedom was asserted only with regard to how to paint| and what was painted was of little or no importance. This freedom did not concern reality itself. But the poet's freedom is needed for reality to be at stake"... Etc.
