The 220 (W 187) was presented alongside the 300 (W186) at the first Frankfurt Motor Show in April 1951, powered like this one by in-line six-cylinder engines with overhead camshafts, they symbolized Mercedes’ post-war revival| with the exception of its modern 2.2 l, 80 hp engine, the 220 model is based on the 170 S (itself a descendant of the pre-war 170 V), its distinguishing feature is the headlights integrated into the front fenders.
Available as sedan, cabriolet A, cabriolet B and coupé from 1953, 18,514 examples were built, of which only 1,278 were
cabriolets A| the W187 was replaced by the Ponton type 220 in 1954| registered in Finistère since 1980, our example, acquired in Nancy, entered Mr. E.’s collection in 2007.
Presented at the time as a restoration base, it has since been entirely dismantled to benefit from a complete, high-quality restoration| today, our cabriolet is in magnificent condition, with an elegant color combination, well-stretched black paint, dazzling chrome and a superb beige canvas soft top.
The interior is equally tasteful, with elegant brown skai upholstery combined with beige carpets with chocolate piping| the woodwork on the dashboard, door panels and windscreen surround is superb, while the chrome trim on the various controls adds a final touch of luxury to a simply magnificent package.
Slimmer and more elegant than the cabriolet B, whose rear windows disrupt the design, the cabriolet A is more sought-after,
capable of reaching 145 km/h, the 220 is very modern for its time and relatively powerful compared to its competitors| a simple mechanical restart is all that’s needed before you can enjoy the purr of its 6-cylinder engine with its hair blowing in the wind.
