In September 1922, Rolls-Royce decided to evolve its commercial success synonymous with ultra-luxury, the Silver Ghost: in 1925, the windows of the Conduit Street shop showed the first New Phantom, the famous heiress that took over a large part of the Silver Ghost’s mechanics. The formula remained fairly unchanged, with the 7.7-litre in-line 6-cylinder engine, the gearbox from the previous model and a partially modified chassis. Customers liked it all the same, but the competition from Hispano-Suiza, Bugatti and other American cars with more exotic performances was tough!
Nevertheless, the Phantom 1 was synonymous with opulence and wealth, and its driving qualities were far superior to those of the Silver Ghost. In the end, it was a success, and the Phantom I remained in the catalogue for 6 years.
Bodywork was a major subject and, as was customary at the time, a number of craftsmen (Mulliner, Hooper, Park Ward, etc.) set to work on this vast project in an attempt to offer this noble ensemble the most appropriate dress: limousine, tourer, skiff, but also Landaulette de Ville, as on our car. When it was purchased by the current owner, our car already had this exceptional bodywork by Hooper, then in its strict original condition, offering the ‘best of both worlds’: a separate driver’s side, and above all a convertible rear section, often used by political figures for parades.
After dismantling, the frame timbers were all treated or replaced where too fragile, the bodywork was completely rebuilt and repainted to the highest standards, the upholstery was completely replaced, the soft top was redone, and the entire mechanical system was reconditioned... The quality of the workmanship is of a standard rarely achieved| the paintwork is close to perfection, the interior is sumptuous... A large file of photographs is included with the car’s file, and can be consulted on request.
Stored in the current owner’s personal museum for a number of years, the car is no longer in running order and will require a complete overhaul before being driven again.
In short, you are looking at one of the most luxurious cars of its era, in what can only be described as concours condition, with an estimate close to the price of a mid-range SUV today...
Change your life, drive a Rolls!
