The Benz Patent Motorwagen is considered the world’s first automobile. Karl Benz filed his invention on January 27, 1886 and received patent number 37435. It was officially unveiled to the public on July 3, 1886, on the Ringstraße in Mannheim.
The engine is a 954 cc single-cylinder four-stroke engine positioned behind the driver. It drives the rear wheels by means of a flat belt and a transverse shaft carrying a differential and side chains.
Despite a rather primitive design, its chassis has been well studied. It is made of steel tubes and the rear wheels are fixed via a suspension system. Despite the installation of rubber tires, the poor quality of the coverings forced him to evolve his creation.
Thus, several modifications will allow it to reach a maximum speed of 16 km/h. The chassis receives in particular wooden spoke wheels, a fuel tank or a leather shoe brake.
Our example in superb condition is an exact replica of the original, the quality of its realization forces admiration. It constitutes a testimony to the history of the automobile and deserves its place in the most beautiful collections.
