In 1953, the West German army launched a call for tenders for a light all-terrain vehicle; DKW thus developed the Munga for: Mehrzweck-Universal-Geländewagen mit Allradantrieb which means universal multi-purpose all-terrain vehicle with fourwheel drive.
Opposed to the Goliath type 31 and the Porsche 597, an order for 5,000 units was finally placed in 1956; mainly used by the German army, it was also ordered by the Dutch army and NATO.
Built by Auto-Union in Ingolstadt, it was also available in a civilian version for the public; around 46,700 units were manufactured from 1956 to 1968.
Our Munga entered the collection of Mr. E. in 2014 and is today in satisfactory condition: its bodywork has benefited from an old restoration and its interior is in a good state of conservation. There are some traces of corrosion on the bodywork and underbody.
Under the hood we find a 981 cc 3-cylinder 2-stroke engine developing 44 hp linked to a 4-speed manual gearbox; not having been used in recent years, a restart of the whole will be expected.
