Dans cette oeuvre, en plus de la mère et de son enfant, une troisième figure est représentée : celle de la soeur. La mère allaite dans un intérieur esquissé en fond, tandis que la soeur regarde et tient la tête du nourrisson. Les tons chauds de l’intérieur et des vêtements de la mère et de sa fille entourent et réchauffent l’enfant vêtu de blanc et de bleu. De la même manière, leurs mains le protègent et l’entourent. Cet te oeuvre a été réalisée alors que Vũ Cao Đàm s’était installé à Béziers, au début des années 1950. Les années que l’artiste passe dans le sud de la France seront des années fertiles puisqu’une forte émulation artistique régnait sur la Côte d’Azur. Le peintre renouvelle ainsi le sujet universel de la maternité qui lui est cher en ajoutant la figure de la soeur et en représentant le moment de l’allaitement. En effet, il s’agit d’un moment très rarement traité en Asie. Vũ Cao Đàm a probablement regardé les compositions de certains peintres occidentaux modernes tels que Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841 - 1919) ou Mary Cassatt (1844 - 1926) qui se sont aussi emparés de cet instant intime. Vũ Cao Đàm's maternities are characterized by their gentleness and delicacy, highlighting maternal tenderness. In this work, in addition to the mother and child, a third figure is represented: that of the sister. The mother nurses in an interior sketched in the background, while the sister looks on and holds the infant's head. The warm tones of the mother and daughter's interior and clothing surround and warm the child dressed in white and blue. Likewise, their hands protect and surround him. This work was created when Vũ Cao Đàm moved to Béziers in the early 1950s. The years the artist spent in the south of France were to be prolific ones, as there was a great deal of artistic emulation on the Côte d'Azur. The painter thus renews the universal subject of motherhood that is so dear to him by adding the figure of the sister and depicting the moment of breast-feeding. Indeed, this is a moment very rarely depicted in Asia. Vũ Cao Đàm probably looked to the compositions of certain modern Western painters such as Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841-1919) or Mary Cassatt (1844-1926), who also seized this intimate moment.
