Ces fleurs sont considérées en Asie comme nobles, symbole de beauté et de prospérité. Ici, dans cette magnifique aquarelle sur papier, support rare dans l’oeuvre de cet artiste, il peint ces fleurs délicates en jouant avec la transparence que permettent l’aquarelle et la gouache. Les traits de crayon sont visibles à travers les légères touches de blancs qui laissent elles-mêmes apparaître le fond de la composition. Ces quatre pivoines se détachent sur un arrière-plan étant quasiment uni et témoignent d’un vrai travail de la lumière par Lê Phổ, qui est alors, quelques années après son installation à Paris, à la fin des années 1930, à l’apogée de son art. Le bouquet est présenté dans un vase bleu que l’on aperçoit à peine, mais qui apporte une touche de couleur franche à la composition, de la même manière que le fait la pivoine rouge esquissée discrètement à droite. The bouquet is presented in a blue vase that is barely visible, but adds a touch of bold color to the composition, as does the red peony discreetly sketched on the right.
