RARE PYXIDE «À PINACLES» OU «À CLOUS»
in champlevé enamel on copper. The circular base is decorated with gilded scrolls and six-pointed stars on a navy blue and turquoise enamel background. The conical lid features the same decoration, with a cross surrounded by six nail-shaped pinnacles (two remain).
Flat gilded base. Gilded interior.
Limoges, 13th century.

This type of "pinnacled" or "studded" pyxis is totally inspired by architecture.
In the past, these nails were used to suspend the pyxis above the altar, thus constituting a small Eucharistic reserve for the rare communions of the time, and the Real Presence in the church where it was kept for the adoration of the faithful. Known examples of this type of pyxis are preserved in museums such as the Musée de Cluny [OA 935], the Musée des Arts Anciens in Namur [B0011] and the Metropolitan Museum in New York [32.100.283].
