MAI TRUNG THỨ (1906-1980)
Enfant endormi avec (Panier de Comquats), 1976
Ink, pencil and colour on silk, signed and dated higher right, titled on the back
21,2 x 31,2 cm - 8 3/8 x 12 1/4 in
Since ancient times, the kumqat (or golden orange) has been a fruit symbolizing prosperity. It is often offered as a gift at the time of the Lunar New Year. The refinement of the basket suggests a moment of family celebration. Quite amusingly, the artist presents us with a young boy who seems to have struggled before falling asleep sitting up. Beside him, a half-empty
basket of this fruit, also a source of energy, was not enough to keep him awake.
