JAPON ÉPOQUE EDO, XIXe SIÈCLE
An important portable shrine (zushi) in dark brown lacquered and carved wood, housing a statue of the bodhisattva Miroku in a round alcove. The exterior of the doors is adorned with a fine set of bronze fittings delicately chased with foliage.
The inside of the doors adorned with gilded saya motifs. Miroku bosatsu, seated in padmasana on a lotiform base, right hand in viraka mudra, left hand resting on thigh, palm facing sky. He is dressed in a fine dhoti and sashes falling in elegant ribbons, and adorned with jewels. His hair is knotted in a bun, and his forehead is encircled by a high openwork metal crown with ribbons and pendants.
Her silhouette rests on a large flamed mandorla.

Miroku (Maitreya in Sanskrit, the "Benevolent One") is a bodhisattva destined to become Buddha and set the wheel of Buddhist Law in motion once the teaching period of Buddha
Shakyamuni has come to an end. According to tradition, this future Buddha lives his last existence before enlightenment as a bodhisattva in Tushita Heaven.
