NOTE
In the typology of court dresses of the Qing dynasty
Qing dynasty, this type of dress is called "jifu", literally "auspicious dress". It is a semi-formal garment worn by women outside official events, but on important occasions (birthdays, weddings, feasts...). Interestingly, our dress features a bright yellow background, the imperial color par excellence. We can therefore assume that it was intended for a woman from the emperor's inner circle, possibly a high-ranking concubine. A similar red-ground kesi dress illustrated in "Costumes and Accessories of the
Qing Court: The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum", n°109, p. 178.
