GOUNOD Charles (1818-1893). AUTOGRAPHIC MUSICAL MANUSCRIT, [37 cantiques et motets, circa 1843-1846]| oblong small in-4 notebook of [1-33] mostly double-sided leaves, plus blank ff., contemporary black basane binding, gilt and cold fillet frame on boards, title on spine Saluts. An important collection of 37 religious choruses, motets and canticles in Latin, written by the young composer at the start of his career, when he was thinking of taking holy orders. These compositions are meticulously notated in a 16-line music-paper notebook, in brown or sometimes blue ink, probably directly, as witnessed by several pages where a pencil sketch was later ironed in ink. Gounod used this notebook while he was maître de chapelle at the Missions étrangères church, where he took up his post on November 1, 1843.
