SADE Donatien-Alphonse-François, marquis de (1740 – 1814)
L.A.S. "Sade", July 21, 1810, to François RIPERT| 4 pages in-4.
To his businessman.
"You ask me if I think well, by accusing you of not walking straight in business? Certainly by making me this question, it was not necessary therefore in the same letter, to justify my accusation as strongly as you do it ". Sade underlines that it is Ripert who indicated the banker Olivier to make the deposit..." Now in the letter in which you are surprised at my accusation, do you not prevaricate yourself, no longer wanting the deposit to be with M. Olivier, but with M. Courtois. After that I ask you if a man who in business matters says today yes, and tomorrow no, is not a man who is not going straight ahead, and if this proof, well established by your very letters, you have the right to be angry when I accuse you of bias.Sade consents to the deposit being made with Courtois, who is "provided with my precise order to oppose the sale if the deposit is not in his hands, he will be able to either allow it if he has the money, or oppose it if he does not have the deposit in hand, and by this means, he owes (for the time) three weeks' gain. [...] As far as secrecy is concerned, rest assured that I have as much interest in keeping it as you do, and I give you my word of honor that our affair is unknown to everyone, but let's hurry, because it would be possible that everything would soon be discovered without my consent. You have your power of attorney, I agree to everything you want, so let's go ahead and no more delays or changes, I beg you, otherwise I'll leave everything there. [...] I have never feared that you would make bad use of my power of attorney| it is now in your hands as you requested it and if you send it back to me, you can consider the straw broken between you and me and the business absolutely lost. He who receives the deposit cannot have the power of attorney.
