MUSIC
10 MUSICAL MANUSCRIPTS by SILVESTRE, [Recueil d'airs choisis], 18th century| 10 volumes in-4, contemporary red morocco bindings with large rocaille lace frames, inner lace, green tabis linings, ornate spines with title pieces, gilt edges (minor wear to hinges, corners and some headpieces).
Splendid handwritten collections of tunes and songs, superbly calligraphed and decorated.
They are, as the title pages indicate, put in order, written, noted and drawn by SILVESTRE, music copyist, at the Cerceau d'or, Rue des Tournelles, in Paris, that Sylvie Bouissou proposed to identify with Nicolas-Charles de SILVESTRE (1699 - 1767, draughtsman and engraver, drawing master of the King and of the Dauphin, keeper of the drawings of the King's Cabinet)| it would be rather a question of a remarkable musical copyist, of which one knows another manuscript in the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek of Munich, in 2 volumes, dated of 1763 (D-Mbs Mus Ms 1155 - 1156).
The lyrics and music, artfully calligraphed, are accompanied by fleurons drawn with a pen and colored inks. All the pages are framed with red nets.
Each volume has a title in red and blue in the middle of rich and delicate cartouches drawn in color, all different, in the shape of a kiosk, an arbour, a temple, a Chinese pavilion, etc., with the number CD in a medallion. Alphabetical tables of tunes at the end of each volume.
Most of the arias are anonymous| among the names of the composers mentioned: Blamont, Campra, Dauvergne, Francoeur, Lully, Marais, Mondonville, Mouret, Rameau, Rebel...
One will note variants in the titles of the volumes: I Collection de Vaudevilles, Brunettes, Parodies, Airs, Rondes et Romances, à voix seule.
