Napoléon Ier (1769-1821)
2 L.S. "NP" and "Nap", the 2nd with autograph additions, January 23-February 20, 1813, to Archchancellor CAMBACÉRÈS| the 1st is written by Fain| half page and 1 page in-4. [685-686]
Fontainebleau January 23. "My Cousin, I am sending you back this letter. You should have read it before sending it to me| you would have seen that it was from a madman"...Attached is the anonymous letter in question, of January 20, addressed "To His
Majesty Napoleon [...] to inform him of a conspiracy which interests him": "The whole of
France testifies to its gratitude for the fact that your clemency has been kind enough to spare the reformed| the smiling noise which has spread has dissolved the most dreadful of the revolutions. 500 young people, after having been united by the cup of blood which they drank, had sworn that they would fight to the last dying man for the glory of your death"... Etc.
Paris February 20. "My Cousin, I have seen the statement which you have presented to me of the persons domiciled in the departments newly united to the Empire who, wishing to take advantage of the provisions of the decree of August 26, 1811 and to institute majorates to be assigned to the title which I will judge appropriate to confer on them, have made the request [...] Two things seem to me to be necessary to be ascertained beforehand, one is the former possession of the title, the other the existence of the Majorate. I suppose that the
Conseil du Sceau has ascertained the first. My intention is that you make known to those who formerly enjoyed a title in the united departments, wish to obtain one in the Empire, and have provided themselves in good time, that they must begin by instituting the Majorate, namely: for Dukes of 200,000 ff, for Counts of 20,000, for Barons of 10,000, and for Knights of justifying income of 6,000 ff"... The secretary had left blanks, the sums (in bold) were added by Napoleon's hand.
