Napoléon Ier (1769-1821)
11 L.S. "Napo," "Nap" or "NP," June 1-16, 1812, to Archchancellor CAMBACERES| letters are written by Méneval, or by Fain (4)| 3 pages and 8 half pages in-4.
[613-623]
From Posen (Poznań) to Koenigsberg (Kaliningrad).
Posen June 1. "The taxation of wheat in Caen, at 33 f, seems to me a great blunder on the part of the Prefect. I arrived the evening before yesterday in Posen.
I will spend another day there today. It is likely that tomorrow I will be in Thorn. There is nothing new on the borders. The Count of
Narbonne, whom I sent to the Emperor [of] Russia, brought me a letter from this Prince, full of politeness, but which contains only insignificant things. However, our armies are advancing and are ready to maneuver. I left the Empress rather sad, in Dresden| but she must go in a few days to Prague, [...] which, I believe, will dissipate her"...
Thorn June 3. "I arrived yesterday evening in Thorn. The heat is beginning to be strong in this country. Besides, I think that the Empress is still in Dresden"...
Thorn June 4. "It is possible that I will leave tomorrow to go to
Dantzick. Nothing new on the border. Everything is still peaceful"...
Thorn June 6. "It is extremely hot here. I intend to leave in two hours for Dantzick. The army is on the move, however everything still has a peaceful color"...
Dantzick June 8. "I am since yesterday in Dantzick. There are many things to do there. Also I am continuously on the move"...
Dantzick June 9. "Everything is still quiet on the border...
Marienburg June 12. "I am in Marienburg. It is advisable to put in the newspapers all that one will put in the gazettes of Prague and Vienna relating to the stay of the empress in Prague. The Police and the Foreign Relations receive these gazettes. - I leave at once for Konigsberg: we are always in great movements"...
Koenigsberg June 13. "My Cousin, I am in Konigsberg, since yesterday evening: all is still quiet on the border"...
Koenigsberg June 14. "Aren't you starting to get vegetables in France? When you read this letter, it will be the end of
June| it seems to me that you must have beans and other vegetables: that should however relieve the consumption. - Have it put in the Moniteur that I passed today the sight of the Grandjean division, composed of Poles, and that I was very happy with it. I do not see any inconvenience, either, in putting in the Moniteur the news of the trip of King Charles and all those of Prague, relative to the stay of the Empress "...
Koenigsberg June 16. "I see with pleasure that the season is approaching when you will not have to worry about food| everything is quiet here| there is still nothing new on the border. I intend to leave this night from
Konigsberg"... - My cousin, I believe I have ordered siege supplies to Le Havre, Cherbourg and Brest. The circumstances do not lead one to think that we have nothing to fear. I therefore think that one could take 5/6ths of these supplies for the food of the troops, except to replace them in the stores as soon as the harvest is done"...
