Napoléon Ier (1769-1821)
4 L.S. "Nap" or "NP," Paris Jan. 29-March 2, 1809, to Archchancellor CAMBACÉRÈS| the letters are written (except one) by Méneval| 2 pages and 2 half-pages in-4.
[507, 509-511] Jan. 29. "My Cousin, I wish to confer the title of count on
Sr. MONTESQUIOU Grand Chamberlain of my Palace"... February 24. "My Cousin, I am informed that several of my subjects wishing to participate in the advantages resulting from my statutes of March 1, 1808, addressed the prefects of my respective departments in order to send us their requests for permission to institute majorates in their families. The prefects did not believe themselves authorized to receive these requests| so that they have not had, up to now, any follow-up.
It is my intention that these requests, or any others for the same purpose, which would in the future be addressed to the prefects, be collected, notwithstanding the provisions of article 27 of the 1st of March statutes, by which it is regulated that these kinds of requests must be addressed to us directly... February 28th. My Cousin, I would like the Duchy of Guastalla to be constituted, that is to say that the Council of the Seal would have in its registers the content of the goods which consist of 100,000 francs of annuity on the State, 100,000 francs in land, 80,000 francs on the product of the saltworks, and 300,000 francs which I will add to it on the Grand Duchy of Berg.
I would like this Duchy to be joined to a hotel in Paris and that this affair be so finished that there could never be any embarrassment or dislocation of property... March 2. "My Cousin, show this piece to Count Regnaud & make him understand that such recommendations for Jews can only do him a lot of harm"...
