Napoléon Ier (1769-1821)
28 L.S. "Napol" or "Nap", two with autograph corrections, Finckenstein May 1-30, 1807, to Archchancellor
CAMBACÉRÈS| the letters are written by Méneval (2 by Fain)| 13 pages and 19 half pages in-4. [373-395, 397-401]
stay at the castle of Finckenstein in Poland, during the siege of Danzig, which capitulated on May 27. At the head of the majority of the letters, Cambaceres noted "to copy entirely".
May 1. "You will find enclosed the newspaper of the siege of Dantzick that you will make put in the Monitor"... May 2. "The post of S. Cloud must be provided by the companies of the veterans of the Guard which are, I believe, 200 h[omm]es. Have a detachment of 60 men formed from these companies, and have it stationed at the barracks of the Garde à Cheval. This detachment will be able to provide fifteen men every day for the service of the Palace," under the orders of Generals d'Harville or Ordener. "I have judged it appropriate to put all the depots of my Guard under the command of General ORDENER. It is necessary to translate in military commission the owner of Saint-Valéry-en-Caux who "led the passengers on board of the English station, and was provided with an English safe-conduct"...Note of Cambaceres: "The 17 May transmitted to the gal Ordener the order to form the detachment".
May 3. On his sister Pauline. "It seems to me that I wrote to the Princess
Pauline that she could go to water. I only objected to it as an advice, because I see that doctors advise their patients to go to the waters when they want to get rid of them, & I considered it preferable that she wait for health in her house, without running to look for it on the main roads"... - My cousin, I received your letter of April 24.
There is nothing new"... May 4. "You find yourself invested with all the necessary powers to restore order at the Opéra [...] I find that your observations about the free shows are well founded. But who gives these authorizations? It is said that Mr. Bonet also commits a lot of squandering by granting free tickets and boxes"... May 6. "The weather here is superb. Everything starts to vegetate. We finally realize that we are in the month of May. You will find enclosed an additional article to the armistice concluded with the Swedes, which you will have put in the Moniteur. [...] The siege of Dantzick continues with the greatest activity"...
May 7. "My intention is therefore that no resolution be taken except by virtue of a special decree or a special authorization. You have the right to take resolutions on a war movement after having the opinion of the military council. You [2 autograph corrections:] have the right to take resolutions on the affairs of the Opera, now that you have received the special authorization that I gave you, but you did not receive it then. So you cannot make any resolutions about finances, about having a citizen arrested, etc.
The minister must make his report to me, as if I were in Paris, and if there are urgent circumstances, take it upon himself. You can even invite him to do so in a council of ministers, but not to cover his responsibility by a resolution to which he cannot comply... - It is ridiculous that when I need conscription, Mr. LACUÉE only wants to call for it on July 5. Besides, all these office calculations are wrong.
The 5th of July is precisely the time of the harvest, which is a kind of country festival where young people like to be at home. This idea of operating simultaneously throughout France is bad. [...] Why put all of France in crisis at the same time, and remain all month of May and June with a gaping mouth in vain formalities, and open the field to the intrigues of the malevolent". It is necessary that "the conscription arrives as soon as possible. [...] My legions must be formed in June, to serve me in July and August"... Etc.
Elbing May 8. "I see with pleasure that on June 5 the first levies of the Conscription will leave. By this means everything is arranged. You will receive tomorrow the continuation of the bulletin of the siege of Dantzick. The general
DROUET made an expedition on an island formed by a canal on the right bank of the Vistula under Dantzick. This island was entrusted to the custody of 1,000 Russians, of whom 400 were killed and 600 taken. We took all the redoubts that defended it & 17 cannon. Our trench was on the 7th, six toises from the place| we crowned the covered way. Everything leads us to believe that this place will not be long in surrendering. I am at
Elbing where I have just passed the review of 18,000 men of Cavalry in good condition and perfectly disposed. It is one of the most beautiful glimpses that one can see"...
Finckenstein May 10. About the royalist Mme d'Avaux who would be at
Montmartre. "I do not suppose that the Minister of the Police [Fouché] could have taken it upon himself to make return
