Napoléon Ier (1769-1821)
6 L.S. "Nap," "Napol" or "Napoleon," and one unsigned letter, Schlitt, Preussisch-Eylau, Liebstadt Feb. 5-21, 1807, to Archchancellor CAMBACÉRÈS| the letters are written by Méneval| 2 pages and 5 half-pages in-4.
[297, 299-302, 304-305]
Around the battle of Eylau (Feb. 8).
Schlitt 5 February. "My cousin, I am in pursuit of the Russian army.
I have removed it from all its positions. I am going to throw it beyond the Nimen.
The weather that we have is magnificent"...Méneval adds: "The Emperor left without signing."
Preussisch-Eylau February 9, 5 p.m. "The battle of Eylau will probably have happy results for the decision of these affairs.
The enemy withdrew in full rout during the night at a march from here.
Various detachments of cavalry are at their heels. The results will be 40 cannon and 12,000 prisoners. The enemy's losses are estimated at 10,000 wounded and 4,000 dead| this is not an exaggeration.
Unfortunately, our loss is quite high, especially in terms of VIPs.
I estimate it at 15 hundred killed and 4 thousand wounded. If the bulletin had not arrived, have it put in the Moniteur that a great battle has taken place in old Prussia, that the Russian army has been put in a complete rout. Forty pieces of cannon, sixteen flags and 10 or 12 thousand prisoners are the result of this action which took place on February 8, and which is one of the most memorable of the war"...
Preussisch-Eylau February 12th. "Since the 58th bulletin, nothing new has happened. The enemy is still withdrawing behind the Pregel. In a few days, I will put my army in winter quarters. Everything that comes back from the details of the battle is that the enemy's loss was three times ours, & ours was considerable...
Eylau February 12. "My Cousin, there is no disadvantage in having the 180 dragoons of my Guard leave to go to Berlin"...
P. Eylau February 17. "The army is returning to its billets| the cold has completely ceased. In spite of great fatigue, I am doing very well.
The battle of Eylau was very bloody. I will go in a few days to Thorn & from there to Warsaw.
Liebstadt February 20. "My Cousin, you will have received the bulletin of the events which took place here. General SAVARY commanding the 5th Corps supported by the reserve of the Grenadiers of General OUDINOT defeated
General Essen at Ostrolenka on the 16th, and took from him eight pieces of cannon, two flags & made twelve hundred prisoners. You can always have this note put in the Moniteur. I believe that this event will end the campaign. My army enters in cantonments behind the Passarge.
My headquarters will be at Osterode. The ambassador of Persia and that of the Porte arrive in Warsaw where I will go in a few days. - I see with pleasure that the code of commerce is progressing and that it can be presented at the next session"...
Liebstadt February 21. "Draft a senatus consulte for the Ligurian deputation"...
