Napoléon Ier (1769-1821)
4 L.S. "Napoleon" and "Nap", Asti, Alexandria and Pavia 10-18 floreal XIII (30 April-8 May 1805), to the Archchancellor
CAMBACÉRÈS| the letters are written by Méneval| 3 pages and a half-page in-4. [199-201, 203]
On the road from Turin to Milan, passing by Marengo.
Asti 10 floreal. He learns "with pleasure that the judicial Code advances.
Also have printed all that there is relative to the code of Commerce, which it is necessary to make in order to present to the next legislature. [I would like, upon my arrival in Paris, to be able to preside over the discussion of the principal points in four or five sessions. Let this work be prepared".
He has no "direct news from the West Indies, I am however very impatient to receive some. As Commerce is now in a better position than I am to know, since ships from America or from
London can bring it to him, let me know everything you learn about it in Paris. Tell me also what they say about the destination of the Toulon squadron.
Alexandria 12 floreal. The affair of Cardinal Cambaceres (archbishop of
Rouen, brother of the Archchancellor) is "too ridiculous for me to take my time to investigate whether he is right or wrong. [...] I am not in guardianship, and I do not need that one says to somebody that he does not have my confidence I find that very moved, and such a comment gives me little opinion of the spirit and the moderation of cardinal Cambaceres.
What would he have done in the 11th century of the Church? As for the affair of his brother Lucien: "I conceive nothing of your jurisconsults. Either Miss Paterson is married or she is not. If she is not married, no act is needed to annul her marriage| & if Mr. Jerome were to contract a new marriage in France, the officers of the Civil Registry would admit it, & this marriage would be good"...
Alexandria 13 floreal: "My cousin, the affairs of the Church are going very slowly. Mr. PORTALIS, with the best will, does not see clearly. There is only one way left for me to keep the portfolio for him, and that is to put his son next to him, so that he will take precedence over all the office jealousies & have all the affairs dispatched. If this means is not sufficient, whatever consideration I have for the talents and good services of Mr.
Portalis, I will be obliged to provide for the service in another way. Then he evokes "a project of insurrection formed in the department of Cher"... [Pavie 18 floreal]. Appointment of the prefects of Marengo and the department of the Po. They must go "without delay to their new functions"...
