3 L.S. "Nap" and "Napoleon," the 2nd with an autograph line, the 3rd with an autograph correction, Paris and Malmaison 10 pluviôse-3 ventôse XIII (30 Jan. - 22 Feb. 1805), to Archchancellor CAMBACÉRÈS| the letters are written by Méneval| ¾ page, ¾ page, and half page in-4. [179-181]
On the next status of Italy.
Paris 10 pluviose. "My cousin, I send you the Organic Statute of the Italian Republic. The Decree of Lyon is its first constitutional act, as the constitution of year 8 is for us. This statute contains the modifications. I have dictated various other observations on each title to be put in the new draft. You will also read the observations of Mr. Melzi and of the Consulate, and you will see if there are any that deserve consideration. When you have read all these pieces, you can discuss them with me. Read the Constitution of Lyon carefully to see which articles should be deleted, and add the observations that your experience will suggest to you. The first title is the royal authority, already written in my portfolio. I wish that you can give me that well in order for next Sunday"...
Paris 11 pluviose. "Our very dear and very friendly Cousin, We decided to provide for the two great dignities of Grand Admiral and Archchancellor of State. We have resolved to call to that of Grand Admiral our brother-in-law Marshal MURAT, and to that of Archchancellor of State our son-in-law Colonel General [Eugène de] BEAUHARNAIS. We also want them to have the title of Prince"... He adds of his hand: "That must remain very secret". Cambaceres noted in head: "To copy entirely".
Malmaison 3 ventose. He wishes to know "when you think that one could adjourn the legislative Body. Is your opinion that I must make it by a message or simply by a decree accompanied by a speech made [autograph correction] by a deputation of the Council of State?
