Napoléon Ier (1769-1821)
6 L.S. "Napoleon," Trier 14-16 Vendemiaire XIII (6-8 Oct. 1804), to Archchancellor CAMBACÉRÈS| the letters are written by Méneval| half-page in-4 each. [170 to 174, 176]
Six letters from Treves, notably against the lawyers, the education of girls and the preparations for the Coronation.
14 vendemiaire. "I arrive today in Trier| I am very satisfied with the spirit of all these inhabitants. I imagine that the Empress arrives at the hour that it is in Paris. You will see in the Moniteur some rather interesting details about an affair in Boulogne [fire at the sub-prefecture]"... 15 vendemiaire, on the diplomats-English spies: "I send you a report of the adviser of State Regnaud. I wish that you confer with him. I would like to have a report in the genre of that on Drake with some original letters of the English Master Taylor by which he encourages to excite intrigues and insurrections in France. That would be enough for me to have him expelled from Hesse-Cassel. After that, see of which court these wretches are justiciable"... 15 vendemiaire. "See to it that one does not propose to the Council of State to establish a secondary school in the building of the Prefecture, and let me know if it would not be convenient to establish the bishop in his bishopric or in the buildings prepared for the Prefect "...At the head, Cambaceres noted: "to copy entirely".

I prefer to do nothing than to take away the means to take measures against this bunch of talkers, artisans of revolutions, and who are almost all inspired only by crime and corruption. As long as I have the sword at my side, I will never sign such an absurd decree. I want a lawyer to be able to cut out his tongue if he uses it against the government.
Then he evokes a project on the right of hunting... 15 vendemiaire. "There are in Paris about forty convents formed by nuns who have gathered to live in common and who hold public schools for the little girls of the Quarter. This shows the necessity of providing for the education of women. See with Mr. Portalis what one could propose of reasonable on this matter"...At the head, Cambaceres noted: "to copy entirely".
16 vendemiaire. "I wish that you see the Cardinal Legate [Caprara] to make him understand that the deputations of the army, the cities, the fleets, are on the march to go to Paris on Brumaire 18| that it will be thus very difficult that one can delay the ceremony of many days| that general CAFFARELLI left Cologne nearly a month ago with the letter of invitation for the voyage of the Pope| that he must have arrived since ten days| that instead of coming in 35 days, the Pope can come in twenty and be arrived before the 18 Brumaire| that finally I wish very much that the ceremony can be done the first Sunday after the 18 Bre "...
