Napoléon Ier (1769-1821)
2 L.S. "Bonaparte" with autograph compliments, Amiens 7 and 8 messidor XI [June 26 and 27, 1803], to Consul
CAMBACÉRÈS| the letters are written by Méneval| 1 page in-4 each, engraved vignettes with the name of Bonaparte I Consul of the Republic. [95 and 96]
Letters from Amiens, en route to the camp of Boulogne.
7 messidor. He "arrived Saturday at 7 o'clock in the evening in Amiens. A car in which was Madame Talhouet [lady-in-waiting of Joséphine] poured. This lady received a slight contusion. I have reason to be very satisfied with the spirit of this city and of all the towns I passed through. Everywhere I received the expression of the sentiments that animate the nation against the unjust war that we are obliged to wage. I remained this morning four or five hours on horseback. I went down the Somme for a league.
This country is very beautiful and is called to a higher degree of prosperity.
I received after the mass all the constituted authorities. I am sending to
Paris the four swans that were offered to me by the city of Amiens according to an ancient custom. I intend to have them put in the basin of the
Thuileries. Tomorrow the city will give me a small party. I will leave on Tuesday for Abbeville. He adds with his hand: "I greet you afft".
8 messidor at noon. "Although there are only 14 minutes, Citizen
Consul, it seems to me necessary to send them immediately to the Senate.
Before he has finished his work, we will send him the others. I am going today to visit the factories of Amiens. Tomorrow I will leave for S. Valery. The
Citizen TALLEYRAND arrived at two o'clock after midnight". He adds with his hand: "Hello".
