Napoléon Ier (1769-1821)
L.S. "Bonaparte", Le Havre 15 brumaire XI [6 November 1802], to Consul CAMBACÉRÈS| the letter is written by Méneval| 2 pages in-4, engraved vignette with the name of Bonaparte Ist Consul of the Republic. [86]
In Le Havre.
"I left Rouen, citizen Consul, on Friday at 6 o'clock in the morning.
I stopped at Caudebec, at Ivetot & at Bolbec & I arrived at Le Havre at six o'clock in the evening. I made my way in the middle of an immense population, obliged to stop at each step. It is difficult to get an idea of all the feelings I gathered on my way. In all the villages at the door of the churches, the priests, the canopy outside, surrounded by a great crowd, sang hymns, & threw incense. The illumination of
Havre was extremely sought after. I spent the day today visiting this interesting city & port. Tomorrow I will visit the interior of the basins. On Monday I will visit the garrison. A small ship is to be launched that day. Tuesday I will go to Honfleur, & Wednesday I will leave for Dieppe. My trip as you can see is delayed by a few days, but it is difficult for me to do otherwise"...
