Napoléon Ier (1769-1821)
2 L.S. "Bonaparte", the 1st with autograph apostille, Rouen 8 and 9 brumaire XI [30 and 31 October 1802], to the Consul
CAMBACÉRÈS| the letters are written by Mèneval| 1 page and a half and 2 pages and a half in-4, engraved vignettes in the name of Bonaparte I Consul of the Republic. [80 and 81]
Trip to Normandy with Josephine.
8 brumaire. "The Normans did not seem to me what the
Citizen Lebrun had told me. I arrived at Évreux, after having walked one or two hours on the battlefield of Ivry. I was very pleased with the state of the factories of Louviers and Romilly. I did not know the departments of Normandy yet, and I had a great pleasure to travel through these rich and fertile regions. We are all doing very well, and we arrive at this moment in Rouen"...He adds with his hand: "M. l'archeveque came to meet me and is doing very well".
9 brumaire. "It is five hours after midday. I went up on horseback this morning at eight hours to visit all the heights of Rouen. Mr. Archbishop [brother of Cambaceres] who is very liked and estimated here agreed to say a mass to us| but he gave us neither holy water, nor oraison.
We will take our revenge tomorrow, which is All Saints' Day.
I have just received all the authorities. We had to talk a lot and for a long time. I am extremely satisfied with the spirit of this country.
The Grand Judge [Regnier] must not lose a moment in having the notary Petry, living in Thy-le-Château, arrested, having his papers sealed, having the protest crossed out, and having him taken to the Temple.
The eight parish priests were to be immediately arrested and taken under guard to Italy. All the agents who claim to be in charge of commissions by the munitionaries of the war and the navy must be arrested, because they have been supplied with a fairly large quantity of grain| thus these agents are hoarders and men who seek to stir up the malice of the people against the Government. I do not believe that there is anything to say to General NEY| he has received instructions from the ministers of war and foreign relations that are detailed enough to include his present situation. I am sending you a report from Morbihan, I beg you to send for citizen Vanlerbergh, and to ask him why he is buying in these unfortunate departments where the harvest has been poor, while we have so much wheat on the coasts and at such a low price, I beg you to tell him that I do not claim that he is buying in these departments, that he has been supplied with enough wheat.
