On the Navy.
1st thermidor. He sends a decree to be transmitted to Maret. "Call
CAFFARELLI and REDON to let them know their destination. You will say to them that it is a mark of confidence of the government which wanting to turn its views on the side of the Navy, needs men of integrity and who are attached to it"... 2 thermidor. He transmits the memory of a captain of vessel. "You see that one believes in Brest that there was in Paris a project to disarm the Wing.
Several ships have indeed been disarmed. However, the Minister of the Navy [FORFAIT] claims that he has not given any orders to disarm.
I therefore desire that you go tomorrow [...] to the Ministry of the Navy after having warned the Minister to expect you there| that alone, face to face with the Master, and without noise, you have all the registers of correspondence with the Ordinary in Brest and the Commander of the arms and the Admiral Commdt represented to you, and that you finally see if you can find traces of this disarmament in this circumstance.
