Interesting fragment of a youthful Serenade by Mozart.
This Serenade (or rather Serenata to use Mozart's title) [called "Antretter"], for 2 flutes (or oboes), 2 horns, 2 trumpets and strings, was composed in Vienna in July-August 1773 - Mozart was 17 years old -, probably as a Finalmusik for the students of the University of Salzburg, probably commissioned to celebrate the end of his studies by Judas
Thaddäus von Antretter (born in 1753), son of the chancellor of the Salzburg region, who was a friend of the Mozart family| it consists of 7 movements, to which the March K.189/167b.
In this charming work, the 2nd and 3rd movements, with their important solo violin part and their key of F major, form in a way, within the Serenade, Mozart's first violin concerto.
The present sheet, numbered in pencil "45", presents the last 12 bars of the 2nd movement, Andante, in 3/4 time| the 1st page gives bars 66 to 70, the verso presents 7 bars (bars 66 to 77) quite different from the edition (Neue Mozart Ausgabe, IV, 12/2, p. 88-89): after a fermata, a modulation making the link to the reprise.
On a 10-line paper (Tyson no. 31), Mozart drew a system of 8 staves, and noted in brown ink the eight parts, all active in this passage, and thus arranged: solo violin (or "Violino principale"), violin I, violin II, viola (viola), oboe I, oboe II, horns, bass.
The complete manuscript of the Serenade was sold on February 25-26, 1975 by the Stargardt firm in Marburg (Kat. 605, no. 808)| it was later dismembered| it consisted of 58 leaves, of which only 11 have been recorded by Alan Tyson (Mozart Wasserzeichen-Katalog, Neue Mozart Ausgabe, X/33, 1-2), who does not mention any of them for the Andante.
