This choir with orchestra [CG 193], first conceived in July 1849 as a piece for piano for 4 hands, was premiered at the Société Sainte-Cécile on February 15, 1852, to words by Gounod: "Mieux vaut vin nouveau que bière" (Better new wine than beer)... Gounod wrote to Pauline Viardot on February 12: "after having given the choristers a preliminary instruction on the ferocity of the accent that I was asking of them, I obtained an execution of such a wild color that my neighbors could have written that it was a herd of unleashed lions and zebras. Gérard Condé speaks of an "abrupt and nervous composition, sister to Berlioz's Chanson des brigands de Lélio" (Condé, p. 854). In G minor at 2/4, it is marked All° non troppo e molto energico. The orchestra includes large and small flutes, oboes, clarinets, bassoons, horns, pistons, 3 trombones, timpani, cymbal and bass drum, triangle, and strings.
