MEITNER Lise (1878-1968) physicienne autrichienne.
L.A.S. "deiner Lise", Göteborg 20.VIII.1933, to Otto HAHN| 3 pages small in-4| in German.
Interesting letter about the state of her research on radioactivity, during her first stay in Sweden.
[Lise Meitner had to stop her professorship in Berlin because of the racial laws| she could however continue her research at the
Kaiser Wilhelm Institute (where she worked on radioactivity with Otto Hahn. In 1938 she left Germany for Sweden, and took Swedish citizenship.
She speaks here of her last research on gamma rays, of her meetings with Niels BOHR, and refers to lectures by Otto
Hahn (whom she calls "Uncle Otto") at Cornell University, published in 1936 under the title Applied Radiochemistry].
Her stay in Hamburg was pleasant, although, of course, there was talk of not exactly pleasant things (an allusion to the situation in Germany).
Copenhagen was beautiful, the weather too. BOHR has invited her to the September conference on positive electrons. She will probably accept. Among the other topics she discussed with Bohr were experiments on gamma-ray scattering. JACOBSEN's results (only 15 mg Radiothor, and only on unfiltered radiation) are not worth theirs. It is important to understand why there is this difference| she talked with Bohr about lending Jacobsen 100-150 mg of Mesothor at vacation time, so that he could repeat his experiments with filtered radiation. She asked Hahn where the Mesothor components were kept, and she asked him to send 150 mg in an insured package to Bohr. She also asks Hahn to send her articles, and material for her research, mentioning also the works of Köster, Droste, Philipp, and her own research...
