Laplace.] "It is with great pleasure, citizens, that I have sent you a copy of the first volume of my mecanique celeste. I accept with gratitude the offer you make me to read it, to indicate the rulings, and to analyze it. I would like that for each chapter, you would indicate the principal results, to make them printed in the table of the work| about as it was done relative to the theory of the analytical functions of cit. Lagrange"... The delay may seem short to him, because he wishes, with his editor Duprat, to appear on the 1st of Vendémaire (September 22): "then, if you do not have the leisure to read the whole work by doing exactly all the calculations, it will be necessary from now to this time, to be satisfied with a rather fast reading, except to come back to it thereafter with the suitable care. A thousand pardons, citizens, for the pain that this will cause you. The interest of the object alone can compensate you for it| and if my gratitude can add something to it, I beg you to count on it...
