LAËNNEC René-Théophile (1781-1826) médecin, inventeur du stéthoscope.
L.A.S. "Laennec DM", Paris, May 11, 1812, to his father, Théophile
LAËNNEC, prefecture counsellor in Quimper| 1 page and a half in-4 with address.
Touching letter to his father, evoking his difficulties as a young doctor.
He is "sorry for the accidents that have happened to you and all the more so because I cannot repair the breach". He writes to his businessman to pay his father "what he has available to me as well as to my sister to whom I will take into account by parts, if I cannot pay the whole at once. This is the only way I can be useful to you at the moment.
This year is far from being better than the previous ones. My boss left two months ago for Lyon. It is said that his absence will last a year or more. 3000 fr. less is an object for a young man starting his state. It is true that not everything was profitable. But you can see that I will be aware this year of this deprivation.
It paid for my convertibles and now I will have to find them elsewhere. In addition, I am not worried about it. Providence will provide and I hope that it will not abandon either you or me. I see as many patients as I can see. Some pay me well, others poorly, many not at all. However, I always make up the ends of the year, without touching my funds in Brittany except for you. They will soon be released, and I hope that you will realize this and that you will do justice to the intentions of your respectful son"...
