He rereads Lowengard's article of July 26 "about my study of Victor Hugo. I am very grateful for your appreciations which for me are so benevolent, so ardent even. They help to make all those who deal with art in our time think, because the questions get confused at every moment.
From the first moment I submitted to make a counterpart which requires something else entirely| apart from that I held back my friends as much as I could. It is hardly possible to fight without losing precious time, and without the result being problematic. On the other hand, Mr. Larroumet had given me the work and I did not want to make him repent.
